How to Make Saving Money Easier On Your Lifestyle

-

Most of the conversation about money management comes down to making massive changes to your spending habits in order to make any sort of substantial result. Some people do need something that strict, but not everyone does. Most people can save some money without making any substantial lifestyle changes. From simply tracking your spending to using coupons for things you already use, saving money is easier than you think.

Use Direct Deposit

Setting aside part of your paycheck for saving is much easier to do when it’s done before you even see it in your bank account. Talk with your employer and get a portion of your paycheck deposited into your designated savings account. Even a small amount each paycheck can quickly add up, especially when you’re putting the money in an account that earns interest. Then redo your budget to account for your “new” paycheck amount. This way, you’re saving money without having to make an active choice of not spending money that month.

Track Everything You Spend

Many people hear the word “budget” and immediately start to panic. Budgets are rigid, strict structures that don’t allow you to have any fun in your life. That’s not the case. Budgets simply help you track where every dollar you spend is going. If you want to spend $300 a month on eating dinner out, you’re more than welcome to. However, tracking your spending often illuminates areas where you’re spending more than you thought you were.

In many cases, people will find an area to cut back on spending that won’t affect their lifestyle in the slightest. This could be anything from a streaming subscription they forgot they were paying for to an inflated phone bill that they can negotiate to a lower rate. This extra money can be redirected to your savings account without any disruption to your current lifestyle.

Switch Out Name Brand for Store Brand

Store brand products often have a negative connotation associated with them as being less of a product than their name brand counterparts. In most cases, that’s an incorrect assumption. A majority of store brand items are made up of the exact same materials or ingredients (or even at the same plant) as name brand items. Usually, the lower price point comes from the manufacturer saving money on the packaging or shipping costs. If you can’t tell the difference between the two products, buy the store brand product and take the money you saved and stick it into a savings account.

Use Cash for the Little Things

In this age of technology, it’s easy to tap your phone on the card reader and spend money without a second thought. However, that also makes it easy for you to go over your budget for the month without a second thought. Consider paying for those expenses with cash instead of your card. That way, you won’t be tempted to buy the large popcorn at the movie theater instead of the small one because you don’t have enough cash for the large popcorn.

While this doesn’t affect the number in your savings account directly, it means you’re less likely to go over your monthly budget and have to pull from your savings account to cover the difference.

Wait Before Ordering Online

With programs like Amazon Prime able to deliver something to your doorstep in practically an instant, it’s easy to spend all of your paycheck on online shopping in mere minutes. If you struggle with online shopping, consider implementing a time period that you wait before you actually purchase those items. Add everything to the cart, but leave it alone for a few days. You’ll be surprised how many things you don’t really need after a good night’s sleep.

Use Coupons and Rewards Programs

Nearly every business has some sort of rewards program or gives out coupons on a fairly regular basis. This is a great way for you to save on things that you already spend money on. Check for your grocery store’s weekly sales and coupons. If you visit a certain fast food chain regularly after work, join their rewards program and earn points on every visit to get free items down the road. This way, you can save money without having to make a single change to what you spend your money on.
