5 Cybersecurity Mistakes Companies Should Avoid Making

-

Cybersecurity attacks are on the rise and attackers keep improving day by day. However, most businesses have let their guard down and made it easy for attackers to get access to their business and system. Cyberattacks will cost businesses $10.5 million by 2025. Fortunately, you can save your business from such costs by avoiding the following cybersecurity mistakes.

1. Use of Weak Passwords

Hackers can crack weak passwords and gain entry to your vital company information. If your staff use passwords that are easy to figure out such as their date of birth or their name, it’ll make it easier for hackers to get access to your company information.

You can avoid such a mistake by making it a priority for your staff to use strong passwords. Ensure they have passwords with eight characters long. The passwords should also contain a mix of letters, numbers, and special characters. It should also be mandatory for them to change their passwords regularly.

2. Failing to Train Your Employees

Human error makes up to 88% of all data breaches. It means that if employees are not educated on cybersecurity, they’ll cost your business a lot of money in the long run. Employees can open phishing emails or download files that can compromise your system security.

All it needs is one employee to make a single mistake and your system will be compromised. It’s therefore vital to train your employees fully on all matters of cybersecurity. By doing so, they can avoid making such mistakes.  Always empower your employees so they can recognize phishing attacks and malicious links.

3. Not Updating Your Software

An outdated software can cause more harm than good. Whenever there is a new update, you should download it to stay secure. Most people delay the software update notification they get. However, delay can be risky. Regular software updates improve user experience, address threats, and fix computer bugs.

4. Using Public WiFi

Public WiFi can be convenient when your staff are away from the office but need to send a file urgently.  Most of the public WiFi is not secure and can pose a risk to your system.  It is difficult to monitor your employees’ network use when they are not working from the office.

Public WiFi gives attackers an easy entry into your system. Make sure your employees use their home network when working remotely and avoid accessing sensitive company information using public WiFi.

5. Not Backing Up Data

It is essential to back up your data in different places. If you have sensitive data under CCPA or GDPR, have regular backups.  Even though you may have a backup in the cloud, it is also wise to have a local backup. Always ensure you have three copies of the data store, two backup copies on different storage media, and one backup offsite.
Knowing the cybersecurity mistakes to avoid will ensure your company data is always secure. Having safe habits will safeguard your business from attackers. Cybersecurity best practices should not be difficult to implement. By avoiding the above mistakes, you’ll improve your company’s protection from threats.
